Rusty Pink Lace Heads – Pinky Winky Hydrangea

One of our favorite late-season hydrangeas for floral design.

Pinky Winky is a distinctive Hydrangea paniculata bred in Belgium for exceptional flower form, strong stems, and dramatic late-season color. Its long tapered lace-style heads begin white, then gradually develop layers of blush, rose, and deep rusty pink as the season progresses.

Unlike many hydrangeas that color all at once, Pinky Winky continues opening fresh white florets at the tip of the panicle while the older florets below deepen in tone. The result is a naturally two-toned flower with tremendous depth, texture, and movement.

Here in Vermont, our cool late-summer nights bring out especially rich color. By mid to late September, the blooms develop the muted rusty pink and antique tones that floral designers look for in fall work. That progression fits directly with the broader color pattern of MFF hydrangea, which move from white in August toward deeper pink and rusty tones in September.

The panicles are typically 12–16" long, carried on strong, stiff stems that hold their shape beautifully in larger arrangements, installations, and statement pieces.

These are especially good when you want something that feels more natural and architectural than a conventional mophead hydrangea — less “ball of flowers,” more shape, texture, and fall color.
